Slow Fashion: Portugal and its sustainable approach

Chances are that if you own a piece of clothing by a European brand that cares about sustainability and quality its label says ‘Made in Portugal’. The country has long been known for its manufacturing tradition. But over the past decade Portugal has started to make a name for itself in the design industry. Thanks to the work of emerging brands like Duts who are using this craftsmanship to create products that are changing the way Portuguese design is perceived both inside and outside its borders.

Care for our environment

Care for our environment is indisputably the most important and urgent concern of our time. If there’s a place in the world that worries about sustainability, it’s Europe. And no, we’re not exaggerating. European stores are increasingly demanding sustainable fashion. Portugal is providing solutions. Portugal produces locally and nurtures the traditional artisanal techniques and craftsmanship of their native country. Duts is one of the brands that is part of an industry of small-scale manufacturing whilst carefully creating beautiful fashion and garments.

The last few years this wave of change has been sweeping through the fashion industry (Fast Fashion vs. Slow Fashion), powered by real truths about its implications on the planet, people and animals. An increasing number of brands are rejecting the principles of Fast Fashion, as a more sustainable approach to making clothes comes to the fore. The Slow Fashion movement has arrived. So what is Slow Fashion?

The beginnings of Slow Fashion

Slow Fashion is an awareness and approach to fashion, which considers the processes and resources required to make clothing, particularly focusing on sustainability. It involves buying better-quality garments that will last for longer and values fair treatment of people, animals and the planet.

Slow Fashion opposes the fast fashion model that emerged around 20 years ago.  And it’s fair to say Slow Fashion is 100% necessary, with certain brands burning 12 tonnes of unsold garments per year in spite of its ongoing sustainability efforts to close the loop in fashion.

Some characteristics of a Slow Fashion brand like Duts:

  • Made from high quality, sustainable materials
  • Often in smaller (local) stores rather than huge chain enterprises
  • Irreplaceable fashion items and limited edition
